In particular, it focuses on pinpointing waste in processes. Waste is anything that impedes the flow of a product or service as it is being transformed in the value chain.

Value Stream Mapping is defined as all the actions (both value added and non-value added) required to bring a product/service through the main process flows essential to each one of them. A Value Stream Mapping exercise facilitates the visualization and realization of a future state Value Stream based on comparison with the current state by eliminating the identified wastes.
